FOR WINDOWS 95
ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS SUBMITTED TO US CAN BE FOUND HERE.
Q: I have a p3 450 with an intel processor. I installed all the cards myself and when I check device manager I have no conflicts registering, but when I turn the computer on it takes about 3-4 minutes to load. I tried a confirmation on each step load and found that the mouse was the thing that took up the time. Can you give me a reason or any advice as to why this should be.
A:Thank you, Aaron, for visiting dearborntoday.com. Your computer question did not explain which operating system is in use - I'll assume you are running Win95. Additionally, I don't know if your mouse is a serial or PS2 device. Nevertheless, let's try to help you. Assuming everything is running smoothly - except for your boot up time - try removing your mouse device from Device Manager (system icon) and rebooting your PC. Windows will reinstall the device (you will need to have any diskettes provided by the vendor). This will insure any hidden conflicts are avoided and should prevent any version conflicts if you are using Win98. On the other hand, if you are using a mouse with non-standard driver and/or software, then this will not correct your problem. In this case, contact the mouse vendor and ask for any updated drivers for your mouse. Let us know if this helps or if we can help you in the future. Wishing you a warm season in Australia and a Happy New Year!
Q: I am having problems when playing games. It dosn't seem to matter what game we put in, it goes for so long and then it jams the computer up These are not cheap games and we have what is required on the boxes.
ANSWER- Games take a lot of memory, how much memory do you have? If you are running say only 8 megs, then you need to add more. If 16megs or more then that is not the problem.
Q: My PC will not run. It runs through the CMOS checks without problem, but when it gets to the line 'verifying DMI Pool Data', it returns with 'press a key to reboot'. I don't get any warning beeps. The hard disk auto detects OK, but there does not seem to be any disk activity. If I boot with a bootable floppy disk in the A drive, the PC gets as far as verifing DMI Pool Data but does not attempt to read the floppy Any ideas please
ANSWER- Put your Win95 boot disk in drive "A" and boot the system. You should arrive at the DOS prompt. Type "sys c:" and then reboot without the boot disk. Should fix it up.
Q: My system freezes up. I have run a Norton scan, and it stops at the .cab files every time. I have also run Norton on everything but the compressed files and it runs ok.
ANSWER- Insofar as your backup program are you using Norton back-up or the Win back-up. If it is the Win version there is an improved fix for the back-up engine on the MS website.
Q: I am having alot of problems with win 95 and want install 98. If I take out win 95, can I install 98 or will I also have to reconfigure dos? I don't want to install over win 95 due to alot of errors and conflicts in system.
ANSWER- To do it right, you should Install Win 98 on a clean drive, that is remove Win 95 all together. You may not be able to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs within the control panel. You will need a good boot disk with your cdrom drivers on it to access you cdrom, then install windows 98.
Q: I recently had to reload windows because of problems with sound, printer and dial up. Now I don't have 16 bit or 24 bit color options in Control panel. It was working fine before reloading windows.
ANSWER- Make sure you install the video card drivers.
Q: I removed netscape communicator from my computer because it slowed everthing down. Do I need to clean out the registry and how do I do this.
ANSWER- Depends on how you deleted the program. If you used add/remove programs in control panel, you're probably safe. To delete get yourself a copy of Microsoft's Reg Clean and run it. It will clean up the registry. Almost any of the shareware download sites have it.
Q: How do I locate my cache file and how do I delete old files from it.
ANSWER- Go to EDIT-PREFERENCES-ADVANCED-CACHE Two buttons - clear memory cache and disk cache Cache folders can be found under NETSCAPE folder IE uses Temporary internet files under windows folder.
